Sunday Activities for April 14, 2019

Overview:   Virginia Docent Exchange check-in is at the VMFA  in the Atrium from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm. For those checking in later, registration will resume at 6:00-7:00 pm in the Marble Hall.   Lunch is on your own but we can recommend two lunch options at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts: Best Cafe and Amuse Restaurant.  Tours following lunch are offered at the VMFA, the Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. The day ends with cocktails and dinner at the VMFA. Please register for Sunday events and inform us of any dietary restrictions.  Please note that the VMFA will close from 5:00- 6:00 pm.  

The Details:

12:00 pm – 4:30 pm —  VDE check in available in Atrium at VMFA. Receive VDE materials and Monday workshop schedule. Lunch available on your own at VMFA Best Cafe or Amuse restaurant. Best Cafe is open from 10:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m. Reservations recommended for Amuse which is open from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

12:45 pm – 1:30 pm — Docent-led tour of ICA, 601 W Broad St., Richmond, 23220. NOTE: Please arrive to the ICA at 12:30.  The current exhibition, “Provocations:  Rashid Johnson”, is part of The Provocations series which takes its name from Steven Holl’s design intention for the ICA’s top-floor gallery space, which he calls “a provocation for artists to engage.”   Registration required.

Situated at the edge of the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, the new Institute for Contemporary Art links the University with the surrounding community. The 41,000 square foot building is a non- collecting space dedicated to exploring the art and issues of our time.  The ICA is approximately 2 miles, or 10 minutes by car, from the VMFA. ICA Parking: Metered parking, by the hour (2 hour limit), is available in the VCU QQ Lot located at 612 W. Grace Street, directly adjacent to the ICA.  There is also street parking available.  Please observe all posted signs.

1:00-3:00 pm– Docent Led Tours at the VMFA. Meet at the VDE registration desk in the Atrium.  Registration required. All tours are 50 minutes.

3:15 pm– Docent-led tour of the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, 428 N. Boulevard, Richmond, VA, 23220. NOTE:  Please meet at the VMFA Registration Desk at 3:00 for this tour.  The VHMC is located next door to the VMFA. Registration required. 

Tour will include “Fresh Paint”– Murals Inspired by the Story of Virginia.                        With over 100 murals, Richmond’s vibrant street art scene is a visual reminder of the city’s history, modernity, and diversity of cultures. This unprecedented exhibition explores the power of murals to encourage reflection on Virginia’s past by inviting artists to produce works inspired by one or more historical items from the museum’s collection, and in so doing examine the present and inspire us to think about ways we can shape the future. The Virginia Museum of History and Culture, founded in 1831 as the Virginia Historical and Philosophical Society, is a major repository, research and teaching center for Virginia history.  For more information, click here.

VMHC Parking:  The VMHC is located at the corner of Kensington Avenue and Boulevard in Richmond’s Museum District. The entrance to the VMHC parking lot is off of Kensington Avenue. Parking is free.   The VMFA is next door to the the VMHC and you can easily park in the VMFA deck and walk to the VMHC.

Please noteThe VMFA will be closed from 5:00-6:00 p.m. 

6:00 pm – 9:00 pm  –  Welcome Reception and  Dinner in the Marble Hall, VMFA.  The Fabergé and Lewis Modern Art Galleries will be open during the reception (6-7:00 pm). Check in also available for those just arriving in the Marble Hall between 6-7:00 pm.  Welcome remarks given by Alex Nyerges, Director of the VMFA, followed by Celeste Fetta Neff, Director of Education. Registration required.
