The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to welcome the Virginia Docent Exchange (VDE) on Sunday, April 14 through Monday, April 15, 2019. Since 1990, the VDE has provided a unique platform for docents and museum educators from art and cultural institutions across the Commonwealth to come together to interact, share information and to think creatively about their craft. The 2019 Exchange is your opportunity to get involved!
The theme of the 2019 VDE is Talk About It: Creating Dialogues. We will be offering an array of educational workshops to explore dialogue, strengthen skills and keep current with approaches in gallery education. We look forward to engaging with new participants and sharing strengths as well as challenges with one another.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Elif Gokcigdem, PhD, a renowned expert in empathy and museum pedagogy, founder of the Empathy-Building Through Museums Initiative, and editor of Fostering Empathy Through Museums (2016) and Designing for Empathy (forthcoming 2019).
In addition, we are pleased to have Dr. Ronna Tulga Ostheimer as our closing speaker on Monday, April 15th. Dr. Ostheimer has worked in the education department of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, for more than seventeen years. Previously, Dr. Ostheimer taught at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the Education Department.
